Location

Allen Severson Wildlife Area is located 4.5 miles north of Show Low in Navajo County.

Plants

The uplands are primarily composed of pinyon-juniper woodland. Paper-spined cactus occurs in the area.

Birds

The marsh attracts many species of waterfowl, with several hundred utilizing the area during the spring migration period. Other birds commonly seen or heard in the spring and summer include Virginia rail, Sora, yellow-winged blackbirds and American coots. Peregrine falcons often are observed in the spring pursuing ducks.

Mammals

Common mammals in the area include elk, mule deer and pronghorn.

Management

Allen Severson Wildlife Area’s management emphasis is to maintain a marsh ecosystem utilizing treated effluent, primarily for nesting, feeding and resting of waterfowl and other wetland and riparian associated birds and terrestrial wildlife species. Emphasis is also placed on providing hunting and educational opportunities for the public. Future management will focus upon water quality and expansion of flows to reach full marsh capacity.

Location

Arivaca Lake is located outside of Arivaca Arizona, about 50 miles south of Tucson. It is accessed along the Ruby Road which is one of the most scenic drives in the Nogales District of the Coronado National Forest.

Plants

The uplands are primarily composed of pinyon-juniper woodland. Paper-spined cactus occurs in the area.

Birds

Common birds include spotted sandpiper, neotropic cormorant, great blue heron, belted kingfisher, northern flicker, black phoebe, Mexican jay, ruby-crowned kinglet, house finch, rufous-winged sparrow, and many more! The lake attracts hawks, eagles and ospreys as well as numerous aquatic bird species. You could also see canyon wrens, white breasted nuthatches, Say’s phoebes, flycatchers and lark sparrows.

Mammals

Common mammals in the area include white-tailed deer, mule deer, racoons, jack and cottontail rabbits, coati, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions and javelina.

Management

Arivaca Lake is managed by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission.

Located along the west bank of the Gila River, Arlington Wildlife Area is approximately 3.5 miles south of Arlington and 15 miles southwest of Buckeye in Maricopa County, Arizona.

Plants

Common vegetation in the area includes cattails and other emergent vegetation, cottonwoods, willow and salt cedar.

Birds

The area is used by quail, doves, egrets, herons, geese, and the federally endangered Yuma clapper-rail and Western yellow-billed cuckoo.

Mammals

Common mammals in the area include coyotes, foxes, bobcats, common raccoons, skunks, and other small mammals.

Management

Arlington Wildlife Area is approximately 1500 acres, being composed of lands owned by the Arizona Game and Fish Commission and lands owned by other governmental agencies but managed for wildlife by AZGFD under long-term agreement.

Plants

Common vegetation includes assemblages of cottonwood, willow, salt cedar, seep willow and desert broom, mesquite and many other herbaceous and woody species.

Birds

The area is used by Ferruginous hawks, coots, gallinules, quail, doves, egrets, herons, and the federally endangered Yuma clapper-rail and Western yellow-billed cuckoo.

Mammals

Common mammals include coyotes, foxes, bobcats, common raccoons, skunks, Greater Western mastiff bats, and other small mammals.

Amphibians and Reptiles

Sonoran desert tortoises can be found in the area.

Management

Acquisition of the Base and Meridian Wildlife Area (1973) was made possible with cooperation of county, state and federal agencies including the Arizona Game and Fish Commission, Bureau of Land Management, USFWS and Maricopa County’s Department of Transportation, and Flood Control District.

Location

Located on the west side of U.S. Route 60, Becker Lake Wildlife Area is located two miles northwest of Springerville, AZ in the Arizona White Mountains off the west side of Highway 60.

Plants

Habitats include an approximately ¾ mile of Little Colorado River streamside habitat, 120 acres of wet meadow, 5+ acres of stream riparian habitat, narrow leaf cottonwood trees located roughly along the Becker Lake filler ditch and south of the lake, a 107-acre lake, and a plains grassland community on the uplands.

Birds

Noteworthy documented or probable bird species include the bald eagle, Southwestern willow flycatcher, bobolink, mountain plover, peregrine falcon, and ferruginous hawk. Wintering bald eagles can often be seen within the Upper Little Colorado River Watershed State Important Bird Area.

Mammals

Common mammals in the area include mule deer, pronghorn, Gunnison’s prairie dog, beaver, badger and raccoon.

Amphibians and Reptiles

Common reptiles in the area include the Arizona black rattlesnake.

Management

Becker Lake is managed by AZGFD.

Location

Chevelon Canyon Wildlife Area is located 25-50 miles south of Winslow in Sitgreaves National Forest in Coconino County.

Plants

Common vegetation includes grassland (gramma and dropseed) meadow surrounded by pine, with ponderosa pine being the dominant species.

Birds

Common birds include wild turkey, northern goshawks, peregrine falcons, Mexican spotted owls, golden eagles, and belted kingfishers.

Mammals

Common mammals include elk, mule deer, Abert’s squirrel, and fringed and Arizona myotis bats.

Management

The management objectives and goals for all of the Chevelon Canyon Ranches is to maintain high quality, riparian, wet meadow, and upland habitat for the exclusive use of wildlife. All of the properties are surrounded by USFS lands, which are managed for multiple-use. All are within a federal grazing allotment, although Arizona Game and Fish Commission properties are excluded through fencing.

Location

The CVCWA is located within the Cibola Valley between river miles 99-104 within the historic floodplain of the lower Colorado River and immediately north of the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge.

Plants

Cottonwoods dominate the wildlife area. The trees were planted for mitigation.

Birds

Common birds to the area include Gila woodpeckers, Sonoran yellow warblers, summer tanagers, vermilion flycatchers, and yellow-billed cuckoos.

Mammals

Common mammals in the area include California leaf-nosed bats, Pale Townsend’s bats, western yellow bats, western red bats, coyotes, and Colorado River cotton rats.

Management

The land and water rights for the CVCWA are leased to the Bureau of Reclamation until 2055 as a part of the lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program (LCR MSCP) which was created to balance the use of the Colorado River water resources with the conservation of native species and their habitats. The program works toward the recovery of species currently listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The CRNC can be reached by taking Route 95 south out of Bullhead City about seven miles, turning west on Richardo Avenue. This road leads directly into the CRNC.

Common vegetation in the area includes saltbush, quailbush, and monotypic stands of arrowweed, and non-native salt cedar.

Birds

Common birds in the area include bald eagles, belted kingfishers, peregrine falcons, red-tailed hawks, curve-billed and Crissal thrashers, Wilson’s warblers, American goldfinches, multiple sparrow species, and many other birds that utilize the area as a stopover/resting spot during migratory bird season.

Mammals

Common mammals in the area include bobcats, striped skunks, badgers, coyotes, beavers, and gray foxes.

Reptiles

Common reptiles in the area include Mohave rattlesnakes.

Management

This property is part of a Cooperative Management Agreement between AZGFD, Bullhead City, and the Bureau of Land Management.

Located just north of Show Low Arizona, in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest at around the 6,330 foot elevation, Fool Hollow Lake Wildlife Area can be accessed via several Show Low city streets, most notably E. Linden Road, N 16th, N 22nd, or N 32 Avenues.

Plants

Common vegetation in the area includes pine forest, wetland/riparian, and lacustrine habitats.

Birds

Common birds in the area include various waterfowl such as ducks and geese, egrets, heron, and ibis, as well as neo-tropical birds like bluebirds, goldfinches, and Stellar’s jays. Bald eagles, osprey and goshawks can also be found.

Mammals

Common mammals in the area include various squirrels, raccoons, beavers, elk and Mule deer.

Management

Fool Hollow Lake Wildlife Area is a result of a partnership between the Arizona State Parks Department, the U.S. Service, AZGFD and the City of Show Low.

Other Amenities

Camping: Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area offers 31 non-hook-up sites and 92 RV sites. There is a fee for these sites.
