{"id":19823,"date":"2025-07-02T12:41:20","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T19:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.azgfd.com\/?p=19823"},"modified":"2025-07-08T14:36:43","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T21:36:43","slug":"beta-beavers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azgfd.com\/2025\/07\/02\/beta-beavers\/","title":{"rendered":"Harnessing the power of nature&#8217;s engineer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>NEWS RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>July 2, 2025\u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PHOENIX \u2014&nbsp; Beavers have a habit of building dams and burrowing into banks. That behavior can cause flooding and damage to infrastructure. But in the right place and with the right process, those same habits can make beavers powerful allies in ecological restoration. That\u2019s why Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) biologists are testing a beaver translocation protocol to turn problem beavers into habitat helpers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a shift in mindset,\u201d said Angie Stingelin, a senior wildlife specialist with AZGFD. \u201cInstead of relocating a nuisance beaver to an area where it might cause less trouble, we\u2019re harnessing its natural behaviors to restore vital habitats within the beaver\u2019s known range in Arizona.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first beaver to go through the new protocol was a female trapped at the Arlington Wildlife Area where she was causing land management issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe set up a special pen where we brought the beaver for an initial health assessment,\u201d said&nbsp;Shawn Lowery, AZGFD\u2019s regional supervisor of restoration and mitigation. \u201cAfter biologists and AZGFD wildlife veterinarians determined that the beaver was healthy, we held her in quarantine for 72 hours.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During quarantine, the beaver went through multiple wet and dry cycles to ensure that no aquatic invasive species were hitching a ride to the new location. The beaver was also fitted with an ear tag and a GPS tracking device.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe GPS device is another part of the process that we\u2019re testing,\u201d said Lowery. \u201cGPS trackers sometimes don\u2019t work well in areas with a heavy canopy of trees, so we want to see how the tracker performs in a riparian corridor.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/fancy_images\/AZGFD\/2025\/07\/11897813\/beaver-in-constructed-lodge-eating_original.gif\" alt=\"beaver eating in lodge\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Female beaver having a late night snack in the constructed artificial lodge<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the beaver had a clean bill of health and a GPS tracker, she was released into southern Arizona\u2019s Lower San Pedro River Wildlife Area. The beaver quickly adapted to her new surroundings, making the beaver dam analog structures, and an artificial lodge constructed by AZGFD biologists, her home \u2013\u2013 and her own.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we build these structures, it\u2019s interesting to see how a beaver will come in and \u201cfix\u201d them,\u201d laughed Lowery. \u201cIt\u2019s the beaver starting to work within the system and it\u2019s exactly what we want.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beaver\u2019s efforts will build on the work that AZGFD biologists have been doing to improve the area for the past two years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe rebuilt approximately 5 miles of fencing to protect vegetation and installed 26 beaver dam analog structures to increase water retention along the San Pedro,\u201d said Matt Minjares, AZGFD senior restoration specialist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next two years, biologists saw an extension of how long perennial water remained and an increase in native plants, trees and wildlife  \u2013 including one migratory bird that hasn\u2019t been observed in some areas for a while.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing willow flycatchers again,\u201d said Lowery. \u201cIn all of our monitoring, we haven\u2019t seen that species in certain stretches of the San Pedro since the late nineties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/fancy_images\/AZGFD\/2025\/06\/11780204\/6285982\/recruitment-of-cottonwood-and-willow-tree-growth-ov_crop.gif\" alt=\"willow and cottonwood recruitment timelapse\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Recruitment of cottonwood and willow trees<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human-built beaver dam analogs are a great starting point, but not a permanent solution. Beavers live and respond to the environment, actively building and rebuilding their dams as the river shifts and water pools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving more beaver activity in riparian habitat actually widens the floodplain,\u201d said Lowery. &#8220;Extending the reach of wetted areas not only attracts more plants and wildlife, it also helps keep the riparian corridor intact during a wildfire.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/media\/wetland-resources-arizona?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery#:~:text=Less%20than%201%20percent%20of,of%20the%20state's%20original%20wetlands\">According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service<\/a>, Arizona has lost more than one-third of its original wetlands since the late 1800s. But beaver dams can help.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy holding the water back, you\u2019re allowing more time for it to infiltrate the system,\u201d said Lowery. \u201cThat means you can increase the flow reach with water that\u2019s already there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase in pooled water can come with some challenges. Native wildlife finds it attractive, but so do invasive species, like bullfrogs. That\u2019s why close monitoring of the changes in these systems where beavers are released will be important.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to strike a balance between the management of one species versus the ecological restoration of the habitat itself using another species,\u201d said Lowery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the first beaver was released, another beaver was trapped at Arlington Wildlife Area. He, too, was placed through the protocol and released at the Lower San Pedro Wildlife Area, where he met up with the original female.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe actually captured the two of them on our trail cam crossing one of the dam analogs,\u201d said Stingelin. \u201cIt\u2019s very exciting to see them together.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/fancy_images\/AZGFD\/2025\/07\/11897849\/6285983\/beavers-together-crossing-in-lspwa_crop.jpg\" alt=\"beavers together in lodge\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Better together: the female beaver meets up with recently released male beaver<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AZGFD biologists will use the data collected from the GPS tracker, trail cams and in-person monitoring to help implement a project with the Bureau of Land Management planned for this fall on Cienega Creek, southeast of Tucson.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While having a beaver translocation protocol that focuses on ecosystem restoration is a new approach for AZGFD, other states have been harnessing the power of beavers for decades.
